Read Colossians 1:1-7. Question for the week: Paul in verse 4 acknowledged the love that the believers in Colosse had for all the saints (Christians). Comment on one person you know (friend, family member, etc.) who genuinely loves other people. Share a brief story how this person displayed love.

The first person that comes to my mind is my father. Throughout my adolescence I always looked up to my father, and was so enthralled by the level of severity he took towards developing personal relationships. Whether it was getting a cup of coffee with a coworker, or opening our house for group bible studies, he never failed to find an opportunity to make connections. This intra personal manner of ministering to others always caught my attention and really caused me to find value in developing thoughtful personal relationships. My father never failed to display God’s love to anyone, even through the lamest of jokes. I feel that his testimony has had a tremendous impact on how I handle all of my daily interactions, present myself with gentleness and respect.

I KNEW A GUY IN HIGH SCHOOL, WE WENT TO BIBLE CLUB TOGETHER, NO MATTER WHAT HE WAS DOING, YOU KNEW HE SERVED GOD. I WENT TO HIM FOR ADVICE ONE DAY ABOUT A PROBLEM, SO HE SAID BRING IT TO THE LORD, SO I DID. FOR FOOTBALL WE HAD TO SHOW OFF OUR TALENTS FOR THE UPPERCLASSMEN. I HAD NO TALENT! SO I RELIED ON THE ONE THING I KNEW. GOD. I TAUGHT A BIBLE LESSON TO OVER 100 FOOTBALL PLAYERS AND COACHES. FROM THEN ON THEY HAD ME DOING THE PRAYERS BEFORE EVERY GAME AND IT SOMEWHAT GOT ME OVER MY FEAR OF BEING LOOKED AT BY SO MANY PEOPLE. IT WAS AMAZING THAT YOU DIDN’T EVEN HAVE TO TALK TO THIS GUY TO KNOW THAT HE WAS A CHRISTIAN, YOU JUST KNEW. I WISH I COULD BE THAT GREAT OF A CHRISTIAN.

That makes me think of a youth leader I had in junior high. Not many people really love working with junior high kids, but she did and we loved her to pieces for it. My favorite memory of her is from camp one summer when all the youth leaders washed our feet after a message about Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. Nicole and I were close anyway, and that connected us in deep way. I still talk to her every now and then, and will probably get to see her soon-she and her family still live in San Diego. Her love for the family of God and for people who are hurting is still a challenge to me to be more like that.
Sorry, that was a little long…get used to it. =)

Bob A. is his name. Bob is 87 today. He was an adult volunteer in my high school ministry at Downey First. He loved high schoolers and was my most faithful leader. He led Bible studies and came to every social event. In his 70s, he accompanied me on all-nighters. His motivation–love for teens.
